U18s vs Leeds 5th Sept (H) - Match report

Recommended Posts

Boro lined up 4-4-2 and with what has been the norm recently they started off very slowly. Leeds were quick to take advantage of this forcing Luke Coddington (Fresh from his England U17 debut) into a low save down to his right. Coddington was at full stretch to his left moments later to cover a wide shot after a flowing Leeds move. Yet again the Boro goalkeeper kept the visitors at bay, this time saving at his near post.

The visitors took the lead minutes later in cercumstances that were questionable. As a high ball came in Boro captain Lewis Sirrell was left in a crumpled heap holding his face, the referee didn’t notice this (and to be fair no player brought it to his attention either) and allowed play to continue and Leeds number 9 Dom Poleon drove the ball in from the right hand side of the box. 1-0 Leeds.

Boro kicked off after the goal with 10 men as Sirrell received treatment but it was soon obvious that the Boro captain wouldn’t be able to return (with what was later said to be a broken nose) and 2nd year scholar Jarrett Rivers replaced him. With a reshuffle at the back (Galpin to centre back, Roberts to left back, Rivers to right back) Boro tried hard to get back into the game.

The rivers change meant another attacking option as he instantly forced the Leeds players onto the back foot driving from right back and winning a freekick on the edge of the Leeds area.

Jimmy Warnett was the first to force the Leeds goalkeeper into movement, a curling effort from the edge of the box went just over.

Despite the Boro side containing many a player who can confidently move the ball about they really struggled to hold onto the ball, allowing possession to return to Leeds and being forced to often play on the counter attack.

HT 1-0 Leeds

The 2nd half couldn’t have been more different than the first for Boro. Instantly from the off they were on the front foot. Jordan Jones cut through the middle of the pitch and shooting from 25 yards. The Leeds keeper seemed in two minds over the bounce and luckily flicked the ball out for a corner.

The Boro movement and passing had noticeably improved with Leeds struggling to hold onto the ball and Boro coming forward at every opportunity.

Boro sub McGlade off Kneeshaw on.

Adam Garrity came close for the home side with a good turn and strike from the right of the box but couldn’t direct his effort on goal. Kneeshaw was next with an opportunity inside the 18 yard box but his effort was deflected wide for a corner.

Jones booked (Late tackle)

Boro sub Garrity off Waters on

Boro in the 2nd half seemed to have players linking up well in close positions. Rivers with Boagey, Roberts with Warnett and Jones with Bennett.

A Warnett run on the left made space for a cutting Kneeshaw who could only find the side netting with his shot. The Leeds keeper was finally worked, saving one and then tipping over from Boagey.

The home side’s best opportunity came in the final minutes when Jones spit the Leeds defence with a pinpoint pass to kneeshaw who found himself between the defenders inside the 18 yard box. But his show was weak enough to allow the keeper to save it easily.

Full time 1-0 Leeds

coddington, roberts, galpin, bennett, weledji, sirrell (rivers), boagey, jones, garrity (waters), mcglade (kneeshaw), warnett

unused – Bland

MOTM – Jordan Jones & Andre Bennett. These two players as I’ve mentioned before seem to have a telepathic relationship going on. Jones offers the cutting thrust whilst Bennett, a much more refined player offers a link between the defence and distributes the ball going forward, or breaks up attacks defensively.

agree with bennett as motm ,jones came in to the game in the last 10 minutes best player in that period but very poor first half.

below performance by him and most others for that matter.

becoming to regular only a few players doing it for me week in week out.

sides were playing are full of big sometimes giant players,

but that should not stop our lads from playing ,if they pass the ball about like i know most of them can do ,then we will start to get the right results.

cloughy once quoted that if god wanted us to play the ball in the air all the time ,then he would have grew grass up the ,ha ha

think thats right?
