Powlay 35
James Montgomery DOB – 20/4/94 Squad Number - Debut – © Copyright Christopher L. Powlay - All rights reserved. Another player who joined the academy late James, the grandson of former Sunderland goal keeper Jim Montgomery joined as a 2nd year scholar at the start of the 20011/12 season after playing a few games late in 2010/11 as a trialist. (Others to join as 2nd year scholars who didn’t feature as U16s are Adam Reach and Ejiro Okosieme) A brave goal keeper who isn’t afraid to come out quickly at the feet of onrushing attackers James has settled in well but as with the other academy goal keepers suffers from being rotated. He has been involved in the reserve/development side more than the 1st years and when called on looks a more than capable goal keeper. Fans may have noticed him in the pre match warm up at Sunderland, he was the keeper involved with Ripley and Coyne. Personal thoughts Firstly, he clearly has his head on straight because when Middlesbrough played the club his Grandfather used to play for in a cup replay recently it was said that he was jumping about and screaming with excitement when the Boro levelled. James has kept the U18s in many a game, this season I recall a flying save vs. Crewe in a 2-0 defeat and an instinctive reaction one in the same game. He like all goalkeepers has made the odd mistake but looks a very solid goalkeeper. Oh, and it should be mentioned that like all goal keepers he is made of rock. Able to take the full force of a close strike on the abs and bounce back up like nothing has happened!
