An experienced Boro side took to the field to play a physically bigger WBA side at Rockliffe on the U18 pitch, a usual the breeze went from goal to goal.

Early on Middlesbrough were looking good attacking down their left flank with Sirrell and Bennett working well together. Bennett, a first year scholar was able to show his close ability on the ball, skipping past one WBA player and 360 spinning past another.

With first team Manager Tony Mowbray in attendance, along with the full coaching team keeping a close eye Boro upped the tempo. A fantastic move nearly saw Boro take an early lead. Fowler, Edwards and Bennett moving the ball about in close triangles managed to split the visitors defence with a superb outside of the foot ball and Sirrell ran free on the left, his low cross was controlled well by Wilson Kneeshaw but as he turned in the box his shot was saved

West Brom were not just here to make up the numbers, one of the centre halves picked the ball up on the half way line and skipped forward before unleashing a thunderous drive which Montgomery watched over the bar.

This marked a spell of WBA pressure which saw the Boro team struggle to get out of their own half let along hold onto the ball. Montgomery was called into making a routine save which as expected he did easily.

Again it was down Middlesbrough’s left that the next Boro chance was created. Edwards finding the marauding Sirrell who’s low whipped in cross was just out of the reach of Kneeshaw. As the ball was cleared Andre Bennett beat his man on the edge of the box before being crudely brought down for a freekick. From the resulting kick Curtis Edwards right foot curler beat the wall but just didn’t drop in time flying inches over the bar.

Boro were coming back into the game and gaining the upper hand and their next chance came from back to front. Okosieme tackling well and bringing the ball forward was able to find Jimmy Warnett who cut inside from the left and smashed the ball just past the far post.

More chances were to follow, Matthew Waters spinning on the edge of the box with a high volley which was saved, a deep cross from the right found Warnett unmarked on the back post, his header was saved and as the ball rebounded out of the box Edge Okosieme struck the ball wide. Boro continued to pile on the pressure and what looked to be a goal bound waters drive was blocked on the edge of the 6 yard box.

Half time Boro 0 WBA 0

Boro started the second half as they finished the first, Sirrell played a weighted outside of the boot lob into space on the right for Wilson Kneeshaw to run onto, he twisted and beat his man going into the box from the right, pulling the ball across the box to Jake Fowler who seemed to get hit feet tangled and instead of touching the ball in he somehow managed to pass it back to Kneeshaw who smashed the ball in from 3 yards.

GOAL MIDDLESBROUGH – Kneeshaw

Almost immediately WBA hit back, the impressive midfielder Tom Turton side stepped his man and smashed a rocket off Montgomery’s bar from what was easily 30 yards out.

It wasn’t long before Boro were on the attack again, 2nd year Jarrett Rivers skipping forward from right back went passed man after man before sliding the ball across to Kneeshaw who had just stayed onside (despite the WBA protests) and his low shot went under the goalkeeper (who will probably feel he should have done better) and into the net to make it 2-0 to the hosts.

GOAL MIDDLESBROUGH – Kneeshaw

BORO SUBS Warnett & Sirrell off, Boagey & McGlade on.

The game was becoming a training outing for the Boro side, pasing the ball around quickly moving the WBA defence from left to right and back again. It was from one of these quick, short passing moved that Boro nearly scored a wonder goal. Some 30 complete passes ended with Matty Waters having his shot blocked.

BORO SUB Edwards off, Maloney on.

Boro continued to push forward, the impressive Kneeshaw breaking down the right before delivering a wicked cross which was just too far away from the stretching Fowler.

Shortly after a clash of heads saw Rivers go down, as he picked himself up from the floor it was plain to see his head has been cut open, a quick ‘Tery Butcher’ like bandage and the young talented right back was back and ready to go.

With only moments remaining Kneshaw had a chance to wrap up what was a great personal and team performance when he was played through 1-on-1 with the goal keeper. The WBa keeper stayed on his feet as long as possible and made a good strong left hand save to deny the young forward his first U18 hat-trick.

In stoppage time WBA won a penalty after Bogey misjudged a bounce and handled, the ref told the players that it would be the last kick of the game and for the 3rd time in 5 kicks Montgomery managed to save Alex Jones kick diving superbly to his right an protect his clean sheet.

Ful time Boro 2 WBA 0

Man off the Match

Kneeshaw celebrated winning a 2 year pro deal by scoring a double and taking his seasons tally to 11. This season has been a break out year as such for the young well spoken forward. He has seen a lot more playing time and as such, his confidence has blossomed. Took both his goals well and was a constant threat in front of goal or wide right running at his man.
