In what could be described as very breezy conditions Middlesbrough travelled to neighbours Sunderland at the Academy of Light. The two sides shared much of the early possession with neither team dominating. The home side took the lead when former Boro U16 Nathan Thomas picked the ball up on the Sunderland right and cut inside before unleashing a superb strike which crashed on off the post. The Boro team were sure that Thomas was offside when he collected the ball but the referee and linesman didn’t agree.

GOAL - Sunderland

Middlesbrough tried to get back into the game against the wind and they may well have had the chance to do so if it wasn’t for an incorrect offside decision against Kneeshaw when he went clean through. The decision didn’t get the forward down and he benefitted from a great passing move on the Boro right between Bennett and Fowler to break free on the right side, he cut inside past his marking defender but couldn’t keep his strike down.

The home side went immediately down the other end and doubled their lead though, Manddron managed to get free of the Boro defenders and hold off Okosieme before striking the ball across Bland and into the corner of the net.

GOAL – Sunderland

Two nearly became three when Manddron got into space on the Boro left and cut inside, his curling effort hit the far post and bounced clear though.

Sunderland were using the wind to their advantage, Boro were struggling to clear their lines, taking short goal kicks and trying to play a passing game out of the defence and credit to the home side they pressed well forcing Boro into poor clearances and winning back possession time and time again. Bland with the pressure building was forced into low saves to his left and right side as Middlesbrough tried to hold on.

On the stroke of half time Boro nearly pulled one back, a Fowler corner was headed down by Okosieme and Sirrell struck the loose ball cleanly only to see Sunderland keeper Joel Dixon save superbly high to his left tipping the ball over.

HALF TIME – Sunderland 2 Middlesbrough 0

BORO SUB – Okosieme off, Boagey on, Waters off, Warnett on.

Boro made two half times changes. Central defender Okosieme, who was the victim of a rather crude challenge well over the ball in the first half was removed as a precaution along with holding midfielder Matty Waters. On came the attacking wide duo of Zak Boagey and returning from injury Jimmy Warnett.

Lewis Galpin moved from left back to centre back, Sirrell dropped into left back and Jordan Jones on his return from a broken leg played more central in midfield.

Boro straight from the off looked more attacking, Jones forced Dixon into a low save from distance. Like the home side in the first half Boro pushed up high penning in Sunderland and using the wind to their advantage. But a solid Black Cats defence were restricting the visitors to long range efforts. Boagey saw an effort well saved, Jones and Edwards both saw shots fly just wide of the posts.

Boro should have got one back though when Jake Fowler created a great chance through skill and trickery. He dragged the ball back from right to left and with a drop of his shoulder he had beat his man, his cross was met inside the 6 yard box by Kneeshaw but he couldn’t direct his header and it ballooned over the bar.

Warnett was next to come close for Boro when his goal bound effort was deflected wide. Boro did get the ball in the net from a flowing move but Bogeys’ effort was chalked off for offside.

BORO SUB – Jones off, McGlade on.

McGlade in full flow.

Push as they might Boro couldn’t score, Sunderland’s defence held strong mainly thanks to keeper Dixon.

Full Time – Sunderland 2 Middlesbrough 0

Man of the match.

Jake Fowler

Jake as usual can always turn a game upside down with a piece of brilliance, his ball control today was superb. Bringing defenders in, and then skipping past them with ease. His work on the left side in the second half where he nearly set up Kneeshaw was excellent.
