Olympic Football PL 2012 - Rules

Way too busy to be doing something like this, but I just couldn't help myself and it might be a bit of fun! Nice and easy competition to get involved in, so I'll try and keep it brief...

The Group Stage

Each competitor will be drawn into 1 of 4 groups. The number of participants in each group will depend on the number of entrants. The draw for the groups will be conducted just after the kick-off of the first match of the tournament (July 26th). You will be required to predict on all 24 group stage fixtures before the Thursday 11:30am July 26th deadline. Please state home, away or draw for each fixture, with one point being awarded for each correct basic prediction. The top 2 scoring predictors in each respective group will advance to the knock-out phase. You will also be required to predict exact half-time score-lines on selected predictions. These are also worth 1 point each, but do not count towards your final score. These additional points only come into effect if competitors are tied on basic points at the end of the group stage.
For instance, both Treknut and Welshy finished joint second in their group after correctly predicting 13 basic results each after the completion of the 24 group stage fixtures. However, Treknut successfully predicted 2 exact half-time scoreline predictions, whereas Welshy achieved 1. Thus, Treknut progresses to the next stage and Welshy is out.

The Quarter-Finals

The competition will now shift from the accumulated group format to one-on-one knock-out matches.
- Quarter-Final 1: The winner of Group A vs the runner-up of Group B.
- Quarter-Final 2: The winner of Group B vs the runner-up of Group A.
- Quarter-Final 3: The winner of Group C vs the runner-up of Group D.
- Quarter-Final 4: The winner of Group D vs the runner-up of Group C.
Predictors will still need to predict the 90 minute basic result for one point each (home, away or draw) of each Olympic Football Quarter-Final, as well as a number of additional factors (one goalscorer worth 1 point, exact half-time score-line worth 1 point, and extra-time / penalty shoot-out winner which is also worth 1 point). If predictors cannot be separated then count-back will come into effect (ie. the higher scoring predictor from the previous round) to decide who progresses.

The Semi-Finals

The format is exactly the same as the quarter-final knock-out round.
- Semi-Final 1: The winner of Quarter-Final 1 vs the winner of Quarter-Final 2.
- Semi-Final 2: The winner of Quarter-Final 3 vs the winner of Quarter-Final 4.

The Final

Again, the format is the same. However, there will be two match-ups.
- The 2 victorious semi-finalists play each other in a one-on-one PL Final and have to predict on both the Gold and Bronze Final.
- The 2 defeated semi-finalists also play each other in a Third Place PL Final and also predict on these fixtures.

Prizes

There are none. It's just a bit of fun. Sorry. Although you could become an Olympic Champion...

Additional Rules

- Editing is allowed if you make that edit within a short period of time after the original post (15 minutes or so).
- If you get to the knock-out stages and fail to predict then your opponent will automatically progress, and you will be out.
- Competitors cannot copy opposition predictions exactly when they face each other in the one-on-one knock-out matches.

Remember that you must state home, away or draw for each fixture and will also need to predict exact half-time score-lines (eg. 1-2) when prompted. The deadline is 11:30am on Thursday July 26th.

Fixture 20 - South Korea vs Gabon.
Fixture 21 - Japan vs Honduras.
Fixture 22 - Spain vs Morocco (+ Exact HT Score).
Fixture 23 - Senegal vs United Arab Emirates.
Fixture 24 - Great Britain vs Uruguay.

All group stage fixtures are played out over 3 days (Thursday July 26th, Sunday July 29th and Wednesday August 1st). The 3 summaries of actual results and PL group standings will be updated after the conclusion of each of these individual days. All QF fixtures are played on Saturday August 4th. All SF fixtures take place on Tuesday August 7th. The Bronze Medal Final take place on Friday 10th August, with the Gold Final on Saturday 11th. Again, updates will follow each of these individual days events.

You don't need to confirm your involvement in this tournament. Just predict on this thread and you will automatically be entered into the tournament and the group draw. Feel free to ask questions if you have any. Good luck!

Oops. Just realised that the first match kicks off at midday on Thursday, so the deadline for predictions has been changed to 11:30am July 26th (so just a few hours earlier then previously stated).

Thanks to all those involved so far too. Probably need a bare minimum of 12 entrants to get it on the go though.
