29' Ji (0-1), 36' Ramsey (1-1).

Quarter-Final 1: Borodane 6-5 Barticus
Barticus will be cursing his luck after recording a score that wasn't beaten by 5 of the other 7 Quarter-Final predictors, but against the mighty Dane it just wasn't enough. Only 1 point in it, but Borodane progresses and Barticus is elminated. However, a standing ovation for both sets of players at the end proved that neither did themselves any harm after offensive performances from both excited the the fans, the nation and the world. I take my metaphorical hat off to both of you.

Quarter-Final 2: Stubbzy69 3-5 Smogsterking the Inspiration
'Ever since I was a young boy it has been a dream to be a medalist in the Olympic PL. I have come to realise I couldn't have been given an easier draw to move a step closer to this reality'. These were the infamous words from the King, the Inspiration, the Smogster. And he lived up to them. Stubbzy fought hard but on the day did these mind games prove too much? I guess we'll never know, but the fact remains that his elimination paves the way for Smogsterking to fulfil his dream.

Quarter-Final 3: Gladgarethhasgone 3-7 Welshy
The bitter rivalry promised a spectacular showdown, but in the end it was a one-sided affair, a mauling, and, ultimately, an embarrassment. Welshy recorded the highest score in the round of 8. Gladgareth recorded the joint lowest. In the end the 12th man proved the difference and the crowd got the exhilarating flair football that they desired. Congratulations Welshy. Technically you're excelling with the Union Jack around your shoulders. But deep down it's specifically the Welsh who will feel the proudest. Commiserations to Gladgareth who fought hard to get this far and will now doubt excel in future PL tournaments.

Quarter-Final 4: Armster 3-3 Ollie10 [14-15 on Penalties]
Incredible drama. Armster got off to an horrendous start, failing to score a single point for much of his opening two fixtures. However, A mexico extra-time victory gave him hope, a Brazilian win narrowed the gap, and ultimately a a 1-1 half-time scoreline in the GB match drew him level. Ollie, on the other hand, got off to a storming start, but a lack of concentration cost him dearly as his emphatic lead became nothing but a memory as the match edged towards a close. Into penalties we went, with the scores level at 3-3, as the count-back rule came into play. Both players scored 11 consecutive penalties each [group stage basic points], an Olympic record, as both competitors still couldn't be separated. However, deep into sudden death, Ollie converted 4 more [group stage half-time scores] to Armster's 3. In an amazing match that will live long in the record books, it is Ollie who will fight for the medals. Congratulations to both competitors in the stand out tie of the tournament so far.

So, well done to our 4 remaining predictors. Three quarters of you will become Olympic medalists, with one of you taking home the Gold. Whereas the last will take away nothing but a sob story. The SF prediction fixtures and PL match-ups will be up at some point tomorrow, with the deadline for those predictions due by 4pm Tuesday August 4th. Good luck. Your country is behind you. And the pressure is on.

12:35, 02/08/12

Commiserations to those who have come up just short, but congratulations to those who have made it to the quarter-finals - you will need to predict by 11am Saturday August 4th. There are certainly some mouth-watering clashes as we edge closer towards naming our Olympic Champions!

Quarter-Final 1: Borodane (P) vs Barticus (P)

Forget Usain Bolt. This is Borodane. After getting off to a flying start in Group A, our Danish superstar led each and every round and eased over the finishing line in some style. He faces a tough challenge against Barticus though. Surely this strong predictor will draw the Olympic spirit from a name which sounds like it came all the way out of Olympia Greece itself. He too will take confidence from the fact that he never found himself outside of the qualification positions through all three rounds. After outscoring his opponent in the group stage by 2 points though, the bookies make the Great Dane a narrow favourite in this tie at 2/1.

Quarter-Final 2: Stubbzy69 (P) vs Smogsterking the Inspiration (P)

There's no doubt about it; they can both talk a big game. But can they perform at the business end of the tournament? Stubbzy has already proven that he can succeed in making an impressive run all the way to the final in the African Cup Of Nations PL. But can the self-proclaimed 'Oracle' go one step further? He'll have to overcome the Smogsterking first, a predictor with undeniable pedigree, yet one who has fallen out of the limelight in recent times after a string of disappointing performances. However, here he is in the final 8 proving that form is temporary, class is permanent. At even money the bookies have failed to pick a favourite. Perhaps the smart money is on first goalscorer; Stubbzy, who usually (though not recently) gets off to a fast start.

Quarter-Final 3: Gladgarethhasgone (P) vs Welshy (P)

It's the old enemy squaring up in what has to be our most tantalising tie in the round of 8. And they have history. Their bitter rivalry was epitomised in the ever-reliable Daily Mail when Gladgareth was reportedly caught on CCTV vandalising the Welsh flag, spray painting fierce bulldogs apparently squatting over a glammed-up skirt-wearing Welsh dragon. Revenge was swift as The Sun made claims that it was Welshy, the 'twisted monster', who supposedly 'grassed' on Gareth, framing him as the recipient of Paul Jewell's sexual romp on the boot of his Mercedes, a scandal that resultingly ended in him having to leave his post as the Head of Elite Development for the FA. Naturally, this immediately makes Welshy the crowd favourite, and at 3/1 the bookies are standing by this Olympian to fully take advantage of this crowd support. Though perhaps the smart money in on Gladgareth; long odds for a competitor who finished top of the pile out of 20 predictors must be a valuable bet worth taking. Let the battle commence.

Quarter-Final 4: Armster (P) vs Ollie10 (P)

Again, we see two predictors in a one-on-one war, two predictors in fine form and two predictors that never realistically saw their dreams of PL title under threat after occupying a top two position at every stage. Both never threatened qualification in the African International tournament, proving that perhaps their strengths lie in the worldwide competition. After getting this far, both will be eager to edge towards lifting an Olympic Gold for their countries. The bookies again make these predictors even money in a tie which will surely be closely fought. However, if you're looking for where the smart money is, perhaps a wager on it containing the least number of yellow cards is wise. These two fair play tacticians will be out to highlight the importance of sportsmanship and the Olympic spirit, unlike the two despicables in QF3 Wink

The Rules

Nice and simple. Each competitor will need to predict 4 outcomes for each fixture;
(1) Home, away or draw (for a 90 minute match) - worth 1 point.
(2) One goalscorer within 120 mins (but not via a penalty shoot-out) - worth 1 point. You can predict 'no goalscorer' or 'own goal'.
(3) Half-time exact scoreline - worth 1 point.
(4) Extra-time or penalty shoot-out victor (so, essentially, the eventual winner if the match requires more then 90 minutes) - worth 1 point.

If predictors cannot be separated then the count-back rule applies (ie. the higher scoring predictor from the previous round).

RE: Olympic Football PL 2012 - Quarter-Finals - 11am Saturday Deadline
Hey Gareth. Don't need exact scorelines for basic results. So I'll just take them as home, away or draw as the scorelines suggest.
