Jack Butland v Jason Steele
What the heck is all this hype surrounding Jack Butland about? Yes he looks like he could be a promising keeper but no more promising than Steele. Hes played a total of 24 League 2 games in his whole career and had an absolute Weston Super Mare for the goal GB conceeded against Korea which in the end was the reason they ended up getting knocked out. He made a couple of decent saves but nothing I wouldn't have expected Steele to make and his distribution looks poor. And now he is set to make his England debut and is now apparantly worth £18 million. How? Is it just me that thinks Butland is fast becoming the most over rated player since Jordan Henderson?

He's an excellent keeper as far as I'm concerned. And, if I'm honest, I'm pretty confident that he'll go onto greater things then Steele. However, the hype at this stage is a bit over the top.

It's the English press building him up so they can knock him down

RE: Jack Butland v Jason Steele
I've made my feelings clear on this on numerous occasions in the olympics thread and on twitter. It's embarassing for England that the media has this much control over the squad selection. I honestly wouldnt be suprised if they don't employ any scouts and just read the back 3 pages of the paper and decide based on whatever they say.
As far as I can see, Steele is way ahead of him in every department. He suffered with a lack of confidence at times early on, but last season he got rid of that and became a better talker and now shows good command of his area, which will only get better. There are few shot stoppers better than him in the country. His distribution is good, hes better at crosses and he's consistent as hell. Butland, on the other hand, is also a decent shotstopper, but he looked dodgy coming for crosses at times, his distribution as awful and his decision making questionable. It's Steele all day long for me. And i daresay any neutral with their head screwed on who had seen both would be saying the same. I also find it hilarious that the man who everyone thinks is going to challenge joe hart just 3 months ago was on the bench in a championship play off game behind none other than Colin Doyle. Yep, definately ready for the england shirt him. |

RE: Jack Butland v Jason Steele
It's rediculous that a player with only half a season of league 2 footy is potentially about 2 gain an England cap!! He did look good at Olympics but surely he shouldn't be judged to be one of the best 3 keepers in the country all ready. Steele for me at the moment is the better keeper who grew immensely as the season concluded last year. Let's hope he doesn't become the next Richard wright with all this expectation, Butland hasn't made mistakes yet but it's how he moves on from them when we'll see if the hype was right

Recovering from mistakes is really the sign of a keeper who can play for England. Look at rob green and Paul Robinson who for my money is the best keeper England have. |

The thing is, the media have made their mind up on both based on half a friendly and once they get their teeth into "the next big thing" there's no stopping it.
