Random Tit-bits
Ok, just a bit of fun, but I was searching the web last night and looking at Brian Clough. Great record at the Boro and all that - but I never knew he met Peter Taylor at Boro (his partner in the amazing successes with Derby County and Forest for anyone who might be too young to know). Apparently Taylor played over 150 games as our keeper. Got me thinking of other less glamourous but interesting ditties to reveal over a pint (bit sad I know).

Here are a few more that some may not be aware of (not sure of absolute accuracy):

The old North Stand at Ayresome Park used to carry the biggest advertisements in UK/Europe/the World!! at the time;

Nobby Stiles used to play for us after Man U and the World cup of 1966;

Boro hosted games during the 1966 World Cup;

I know some of you may well know most of these, but I was curious if anyone else had some interesting, less known, facts on the Boro?

RE: Random Tit-bits
Well well well - Peter Taylor did indeed play as Boro's goal keeper. We signed him from Coventry if I remember rightly.

Taylor was brilliant in the air at shots or crosses and could accurately throw the ball half the length of the pitch to get our attack going. Unfortunately, like most players he had a weakness and was very slow at getting down so daisy cutters rolled genty past him.

In 1966 they put seats in the "bob end" which moved the proper supporters to the Holgate End where they could still stand. We were the only ground that had the same team play three matches there - North Korea.

The wee lads from Korea lost their first game and were a bit lost to be fair. They had upped their game considerably by the second game which they drew. Then they had the much vaunted Italians who thought they could win just by turning up. The North Koreans now had the Boro supporters behind them and it was like a home match for them. They played even better and beat the Italians 1-0 resulting in a jubilant Boro crowd invading the pitch to congratulate their new heros.

I kept my tickets in the original envelope and eventually sold them for 10 times more than the value of a W.C. 1966 programme - Surprised ? so was I !!

RE: Random Tit-bits
Biggest win is against Brighton.(9-0) Biggest defeat is to blackburn(same score)
Hartlepool is the Boros closest geographical rival.
THE Diego Forlan was on the plane to sign a 6.9 mil deal to play for the Boro when manU heard about the deal and Highjacked it. He landed and in a few hours signed on the dotted line.

Imagine how things could have been if forlan had been snaffled. I wonder if the boro would be in the champo now in that alternate timeline

Arsenal wont spend more than 16 million pounds on 1 player this transfer window. Big Grin

Was that because of the £1000 or because we got him from Sunderland?

RE: Random Tit-bits
Bob Mortimer and Chris Rea are obviously Boro fans. But what about David Shaylor (an infamous spy - no joke) and Prince William was a Boro fan in the late 80s/early 90s (pre Villa).

Also, the actor off Ballykissangel (Stephen Tomplinson?) who even wrote it into the script of one of the episodesSmile

RE: Random Tit-bits
Aye the 9-0 v Brighton. I was there. I still have the programme which has a number of autographs on it (from both sides)

The Scorers Clough 5, Peacock 2/3 and Harris. If Peacock only had 2 then I suspect McLean scored the other goal.

Brighton had just come up from the third division and I do not think anyone could have predicted the result. If I recollect correctly it got to the point that every time we attacked we scored. I went home excited but a little shocked

What is almost as amazing is the score in the return game at Brighton. We won 6-4 and I've a feeling that Clough scored 4 there too
