McManus on his way out? - Date: 11 Jun 2012

Boro defender Stephen McManus may be poised to leave the club for Bristol City in a cut-price deal as the transfer market starts to hot up.

Aside from their Bet on Spain this summer, football pundits note that the strapping Scot is a full-time target for City boss Derek McInnes after a successful loan spell at Ashton Gate last season.

The centre-back played six games in a short-term switch to the Robins before being recalled to Boro following injuries to Rhys Williams and Matthew Bates.

Now with McInnes back at work and looking to rebuild for the new campaign, he wants the Scotland international in the west country on a permanent basis.

“We have identified all the positions where we would like to bring players in to get a more balanced squad,” said McInnes, who has eight players out of contract in the next few weeks and is eager to rebuild his Robins squad.

Meanwhile, Boro boss Tony Mowbray may be set to step up his interest in Doncaster defender George Friend.
Reports in South Yorkshire suggest Boro are one of three Championship sides keen on Rovers’ former Wolves left back.

Devon-born Friend, 24, was one of relegated Rovers’ better performers last term and won both the club Player of the Year and supporters’ Player of the Year gongs at the end of the term.

Doncaster chiefs would prefer to keep their highly-rated skipper but, after being demoted to League One, they face a £1m deficit in their playing budget and manager Dean Saunders may have to do plenty of wheeling and dealing.

Rovers would want a fee but are in no position to haggle too much and Friend would command relatively low wages so would fit Boro’s belt-tightening profile.

Burnley and Crystal Palace are also said to have been regularly running the rule over the tall, athletic defender.

Meanwhile, this is the place to Bet on England this weekend!
