Adam Stephen Clayton was born on January 14, 1989, in the city of Manchester.

At the age of 19, he signed his first professional contract with Manchester City. Clayton played once for the Manchester City's Reserves team before making a loan move to Carlisle on November 2, 2009. At Carlisle, he spent six months, made 34 appearances, scored twice and assisted four times.

On his return to Manchester City, he was loaned out to Leeds United, before joining them permanently after a memorable one month stay at Elland Road. The deal was reported to be worth about £400,000.

After a handful of appearances for Leeds United from August to November, he was loaned out to Peterborough United on an initial one-month loan arrangement. But Clayton’s performances earned him an extended loan spell at the club for an extra one month.

In March 2011, he was again sent on loan by Leeds United to MK Dons, where he featured eight times and scored once in the space of three months.

In the 2012/2013, he became an integral part of Simon Grayson's Leeds United side, making a total of 43 league appearances and registered six goals and five assists from the midfield. Consequently, the club negotiated a contract extension with the player.

It looked like the destiny of Simon Grayson and Adam Clayton were intertwined when the manager of the newly-promoted Huddersfield Town made him his first signing on July 6, 2012. He signed a deal worth £1 million and in his two-year stint at the club, he featured prominently for the club, playing 85 League games for The Terriers. At the end of a fine 2013/2014 season, Middlebrough FC swooped in to secure his services on a four-year deal, reported to worth about £1.5 million.

Since joining Boro in the summer of 2014, the combative midfielder has been nothing short of consistent for the club in terms of appearance and performance. He was an essential part of the Boro team that featured in the 2016/2017 Premier League season, where he formed a formidable partnership with club captain Grant Leadbitter.
